![]() ![]() DeeAnn Budney
Founder / CEO / Creative Director If you knew DeeAnn Budney 15 years ago, she probably told you then that she was waiting for her hair to go gray so she could start her own ad agency. She used every experience she had along the way as inspiration for this agency-to-be: how to build trust with clients, how to motivate agency teams, how to do good work in less-than-perfect situations. In 2003, after nearly five years at FCB Chicago and 10 years at San Francisco ad agency Citron Haligman Bedecarré (now AKQA), she opened the doors of the Hive. In the years prior to starting the Hive, she worked as an art director and creative director on mostly consumer-facing brands, both big and small, old and new, with big national budgets and smaller local ones. (We won’t bore you here with a complete list of clients; her experience is included on the Clients page.) DeeAnn is one of the rare optimists in advertising. Since she’s tilted at quite a few windmills and won, she believes that no matter how impossible the task may seem, there’s a way to get it done. |
![]() ![]() Anne Smith Rainey
Partner / Director of Client Services Who says a Hive can have only one queen? Anne Smith Rainey recently joined DeeAnn to take the Hive to even higher levels of excellence. Anne was most recently Director of Client Services at Euro RCSG in San Francisco. At Euro, not only did she lead many of the agency’s new business wins and manage the agency’s biggest clients on a day-to-day basis, she also tended to the care and feeding of the account management staff. She seemed to keep all those balls in the air effortlessly! Anne has led marketing efforts on many iconic brands: Stainmaster, Genentech, HP, WellPoint/Anthem, and Microsoft. She’s worked in management roles at Publicis & Hal Riney, Publicis Modem, and McCann/MRM Partners, and cut her teeth at some of the best agencies in L.A. and San Francisco. Anne hails from a dairy farm in Northern Illinois; we think that’s where she learned her amazing work ethic. She lives in Oakland with her family and her growing collection of 1940s pottery. |
![]() ![]() Steve Koskela
Chief Financial Officer Steve Koskela has been around. Seriously. Before joining the Hive, his prior industry experience includes senior management posts with a number of highly regarded, award-winning agencies, including roles as CFO for Ground Zero Advertising and CFO-North America for Chiat/Day Advertising, Inc., where he was responsible for financial operations of all U.S. and Canadian office locations and subsidiaries in the years leading up to the agency's sale to TBWA Worldwide and the Omnicom Group. He recently completed a five year term as Chairman of the Agency Finance Committee-Western Region for the American Association of Advertising Agencies and he served for many years on the National Agency Fiscal Control Committee. He has authored numerous articles and been a frequent participant as a panelist and speaker in a variety of industry forums on the subject of advertising agency compensation. He currently manages SJK Advisory Group, an independent consulting practice that provides financial guidance to a variety of marketing service organizations, including our humble agency, the Hive. Steve hails from California, but currently lives in Michigan. We think he likes working with us at least partly for the weather. |
![]() ![]() Erika Spence
Media Director Erika Spence is one of the truly creative people in the media field, and has been an integral part of the Hive’s success since day one. She personifies the Hive ideal of being an “A” student—she’s a strong strategic thinker first, but won’t rest until all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. Erika began her career at FCB San Francisco more than twenty years ago, where she played an integral role in developing groundbreaking work for Levi’s Jeans for Women. At FCB, she also worked on Janus, Coors, and Pillsbury. In 1995, she joined Citron Haligman Bedecarré, where she and DeeAnn started their long collaboration. Erika headed efforts there on Palm, Visa, Dreyfus, Sony Vaio, CNET, and PowerBar. In 1999, she was named one of Adweek’s Best and Brightest in Media. Erika splits her time between Brooklyn and San Francisco; she brings those of us at the Hive the trends before anyone else in San Francisco gets them. |
